5 Favorite Vegetable Garden Tools

At Rita’s Roots, we advocate having good gardening tools. It makes gardening so much more enjoyable.

As you prepare for the Fall gardening season — our favorite time to garden in the Lowcountry — consider investing in quality gardening tools.

A wrap-up of our Top Tool Picks and why we love them are included here.

  1. DIGGING FORK

Why we love it: to aerate soil and to allow new compost to work into soil

  • Other Uses: to digging up roots vegetables and sweet potatoes

  • Cost: $64.99

  • Where to Purchase: GrowOrganic.com

2. COBRA

Why we love it: So versatile! The Cobra is the last hand-held garden tool you will ever buy. And it’s made in the USA!

  • Other Uses: It spreads soil, mixes compost and fertilizer, digs planting holes and seed furrows, and weeds the surface of the soil. We especially like to use it to loosen and fluff the soil before planting. Also great for pulling up those pesky running weeds such as dollarweed and florida betony

  • Cost: $25.00

  • Where to purchase: Our Online Store

3. BONSAI SCISSORS OR NEEDLE NOSE SHEARS

Why we love it: They are easy to maneuver around the leaves of the plants and fine points when harvesting herbs

  • Other Uses: Cutting flowers and pruning

  • Cost: $16.00

  • Where to purchase: Our Online Store

4. PRUNER FELCO NO. 6

Why we love it: The No. 6 is designed for smaller hands. Great quality! Will last for 10+ years if stored indoors between uses

  • Other Uses: Great tool for cutting through thicker branches and stalks of veggie plants as well as harvest. All your pruning needs!

  • Cost: $57.39

  • Where to purchase: Felco.com

5. LARGE, NON-METAL HARVEST BUCKET

Why we love it: Some people like to put their vegetables directly in a large metal colander or bowl. While that can make washing easier, the metal heats up quickly. If using metal, you’ll need to take it indoors or into the shade right away. Better to just avoid metal.

  • Other Uses: To keep it clean, we recommend that you avoid using your harvest bucket for anything else. Use a separate bucket for compost.

  • Cost: $8.72

  • Where to purchase: Our Online Store
